The Background

§         The Heart of the Hills Market in the Old Woollen Mills, Lobethal, in the Adelaide Hills, is a cosy, country, classy market showcasing a wide range of local vendors, producers and crafters. The Old Onkaparinga Woollen Mills buildings provide a perfect environment for this activity. Surrounded by orchards and wineries Lobethal and this picturesque setting are just 40 minutes from the centre of Adelaide . Completely undercover.

§         This market venue is designed to capture the essence of the Adelaide Hills. Opening in December 2003 the market has over 100,000 visitors each year.

§         Visitors are treated to a feast for all the senses with food, beverages, crafts and entertainment.

§         Various sized tenancies (stalls) are available on a casual and permanent basis to strictly qualified applicants.

§         The market is open on weekends and public holidays. Opening times from 10:00am to 4:00pm  and perhaps extended during the Daylight Saving period.

§         The Old Woollen Mill Building 21 provides the best environment for the first stage, Building 5D open as an extension with 35 extra stall sites in October 2005 and other buildings currently vacant considered for future expansion.

§         Appearance of the building has been enhanced with colourful signage and banners, and stalls have been erected to create an authentic market-place feel.

§         Continuous promotion will be undertaken via local and major media, tourism authorities and operators.

§         This market will provide a source for regular and specialised produce in this fast developing community.

§         The market offers the township a venue and activity operating all year round, with the effect of drawing visitors into the area and creating real growth in tourism.

§         Markets are well-known in the Adelaide Hills but so many are either limited in their offerings or forced into the open air, which is not always suitable, depending on the weather. The venue for this market provides fully enclosed and covered space – climatic conditions are no longer a concern.

§         Local growers, providers and artisans have struggled with individual farm/home based or retail outlets where attracting visitors is difficult. A venue of this nature creates excitement and atmosphere giving the visitors a wonderful and enjoyable shopping and exploring experience.

Coffee Shop:- The market incorporates a delightful coffee shop where you can sit and enjoy a delicious cappuccino or latte with something sweet or savoury, home made for buy the operator, while you read the paper.

Museum:- We have made space within the market for a small exhibition of Onkaparinga Woollen Mill memorabilia including working looms and visual displays. The buildings have been empty since the mill closed operations in 1993.

Also in the precinct of the Old Woollen Mills is the National Costume Museum, 3 wineries, Chocolate Factory Outlets and much more.
